The way horses were meant to live…

Crawford Acres, owned by Bill and Carolyn Crawford, is devoted to raising quality pleasure horses. Bill has been working with horses for 35 years and stood an American Quarter Horse stallion for over 20 years. We currently stand a Friesian stallion (Derek from the Friesian Connection) and have American Quarter Horses, Tennessee Walking Horses and Percheron/Quarter Horse cross mares. The farm is approximately 74 acres of rolling pastures, hay fields and woods in central Ohio.

Our horses live the way horses were meant to live – outdoors (except during very extreme weather). They are brought into our new 15 stall barn daily to be fed grain and commercially prepared feed, foals start getting prepared youth food at one week. Our horses have pasture and hay available and access to automatic waterers at all times. Our foals are imprinted at birth and worked with daily for the first couple of weeks and frequently after that. As a result of this they are friendly and receptive to training. All of our horses receive regular worming, immunizations, and farrier care. Our horses do not have the vices that being confined in a stall sometimes promotes. The mares with foals all share the same pasture so that the foals are socialized by interacting with the other horses and foals

The Friesian

The Friesian horse is a distinctive, easily recognized breed. It is always black and the only white marking permitted is a star. It is 15 to 16 hands tall with an elegant arched neck, long mane, flowing tail and generous feathers on its feet.

The Friesian is one of Europe’s oldest breeds and was used originally to work the land, but now, because of its agility and good temperament, the Friesian makes a great riding horse both on the trail and in the dressage arena. This versatile breed excels as a harness horse because it moves with an impressive, energetic active trot. The Friesian’s noble bearing and black color makes them ideal for ceremonial occasions and in their native Holland they are used to pull the Dutch Royal Carriage.

Through the centuries the Friesian has been used to improve other European breeds and today makes an ideal cross to complement breeds such as Standardbreds, Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walking Horses, draft horse breeds, stock breeds and others. Horses with 25% Friesian blood or more may be registered as Friesian Sport Horses. Consult the Friesian Sport Horse site for more information.
